Don’t write Nigeria out of existence – Information Commissioner, Alh Waheed Odusile

The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Waheed Odusile, has charged journalists in Nigeria to be mindful of how they would report the 2023 Election.

The Commissioner disclosed this during his opening speech at workshop organised by the Nigeria Press Council, themed, “Effective Coverage and Reportage of 2023 General Elections”, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

“The way you report will determine the way Nigeria will see it. You don’t need to heat up the polity. If you use your pen and microphone to write Nigeria to destruction, where will you be?

“We should mind our pen, mind what we write so that we don’t write Nigeria out of existence. Truth in the context of peace! What essence is the truth that will brings about conflict?

“If a politician call his opponent thief, you don’t need to write it.

“Nigeria must remain united and indivisible. Whatever is our differences, we must resolve it amicably.

“We should behave as patriot, Nigeria first; think twice before bringing Nigeria into problems.

“For us in Ogun State, unity is our watchword”.

Speaking also, the Nigeria Press Council’s Executive Secretary, Mr Francis Nwosu stated that NPC will continue to do what it should do to assist journalists, adding that the Press Council is not to gag the press but to be of help to journalists.

“Beyond that, NPC will do everything to protect journalists. Nigeria journalists must continue to excel.

“Let journalists know that they are the stakeholders who will mostly benefits from the functions of NPC. We must all fight earnestly to bring back journalism to where it belongs.

“Please, let us keep Nigeria journalism alive again. All hands must be on deck to reposition journalism”, Nwosu charged.

In her goodwill message, as the Chief Host, the Caretaker Chairperson of NUJ Ogun State Council, Mrs Omolola Adeyinka, commended the NPC over its unrelenting efforts at making sure Nigeria journalists live up to expectations, expecially when the general election is around the corner.

Speaking further, Mr Simeon FAKEYE who represented the Chairperson enjoined the participants to take into proper use the reminders from the workshop.

“The theme of this year’s workshop is timely, hence, considering the fact that the general election is few days away, as usual, the Nigeria Press Council is here to remind us of those special and important hints on how to carry out the coverage of the electoral processes.

“On behalf of all participants, I am assuring NPC that comes 2023, South West and Nigeria as a whole will have it good in terms of fair, balanced, and conflict sensitive reportage”.
